La Merce was one of my favorite weekends here in Spain so far. There was SO much to do! Basically, La Merce is the celebration of Barcelona. Usually this celebration lasts a whole week long, but since Spain is in what they call"crisis" (aka verging on depression) they shortened the celebration to 4 days. Because of this we got Monday off of school (I already don't have school on Fridays) making it a four day weekend of festivities! I didn't get pictures of everything I experienced during the weekend, but here are a few of the highlights!
The Sagrada Familia Light Show was probably my favorite event about the La Merce weekend! Im not sure exactly what I expected it to be like but it was seriously amazing. All the lights moving on the building made the building look like it was water rippling and that vines were growing on it and whatnot. It was really impressive. Above theres a small clip of the 20min show, it doesn't give it any justice to how awesome it really was, but its still really cool to see!
We went to Parc de la Ciutadella one night as well and watched some of the events happening there! There was a fire contemporary dance performance and multiple glowing acts like the dancing robots in the picture above and a glowing juggling team.
The next day at Parc de la Ciutadella was a wine tasting. For 10euros you got a cup and 6tickets which could get you 3 glasses of wine! Wine tastings are actually very fun. I need to start writing down what types I like the best so I can remember them later!
A different day we went to a Parade! It was kind of odd the things they had in it. I did not fully understand what some of the giant creatures were, but it was still interesting to watch. My favorites in the parade were the people type things that looked like Gaudis archtecture. But there were also a lot of pigs represented in the parade and I wish I knew the significance of them here in Spain. Also some of the creature things were kinda creepy looking. There were also little people that would just put these giant head masks on and run around towards the children or do other various weird things while waking down the street.
On Montjuic one day we visited a Music Festival, this was interesting, all the various types of music I heard this weekend were different and I actually liked a lot of them!
Finally, Monday night was the last fireworks show! The show was around 15-20min long and synced with music! At one point everyone brought out sparklers and lit them up while the show was going. It was amazing to see. But of course, us being Americans didn't know to buy sparklers so we were without them until some nice people around us started handing us some! So kind!
Overall, La Merce was a very eventful weekend! There was so much to do and things to see and everything was interesting to experience!
